City Councilor Anita Joshi, a Democrat representing the West District, underscores the community's commitment to proactive safety measures. "We want to be ahead of the curve," she emphasizes, "to ensure that our residents are protected from potential hazards."
The proposed regulations aim to strike a balance between accommodating various forms of transportation and maintaining a safe environment for all trail users. One key suggestion is to redirect higher-speed electric motorcycles, or 'e-motos,' onto the streets, subjecting them to state regulations and enforcement.
"By doing so, we can leverage existing laws to manage these faster vehicles," explains Carmel Police Chief Drake Sterling. "It's a practical solution that ensures the safety of our pedestrians."
However, the discussion extends beyond just the 'e-motos.' City leaders are also addressing the issue of speeding, regardless of the vehicle type. One proposal suggests implementing a mandatory walking zone during peak hours at Main Street, creating a transition area between biking and walking spaces.
"It's a common-sense approach," Joshi adds, "especially given the high volume of traffic in that area."
The current ordinance already prohibits certain behaviors like stunt riding and racing, but the council is considering increasing fines to deter these actions. Chief Sterling applauds this move, emphasizing the need for fines that are "appropriate for the offense" to effectively curb undesirable behavior.
